What kind of wood was the cross of Jesus Christ made of?

I think no one in this 21st century should have some valuable knowledge about the wood that is used to make the cross of Jesus 2000 years ago. But according to best knowledge available now, science believe that the wood of Olive tree is used to made the cross of Jesus.

Lots of people are changing their focus from Jesus by going behind this kind of things. From my own knowledge and wisdom, I would like to share everyone of you some valuable information to change certain misunderstandings about the cross.

1.There is nothing special with the cross of Jesus Christ. The cross of Jesus is just like the any other cross which is used to crucify people that time.

2.The cross of Jesus was not made of any special wood. It was also made of the same wood that is used to crucify others. The two thieves crucified with Jesus and others were also crucified on crosses made of the same wood.

3.The cross of Jesus is not a perfectly shaped cross with rectangular wooden bars finely polished as we see in pictures and movies.

I would also like to say you something about the crucifixion of Jesus is that Jesus was also crucified in a similar way as that of the thieves crucified with him. There is no much difference in the crucifixion of Jesus from the normal system of crucifixion existed at that time. Jesus carried the cross to Golgotha and was nailed in the arms and legs just as other thieves and as system existed that time.

The only noticeable difference happened in the crucifixion of Jesus according to me was that the soldiers made him wear the crown of thorns and wrote an inscription which they put it on the cross written, "JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS."

From all this we can clearly see physically that the death of Jesus on the cross was not the great thing which Jesus did. The torture Jesus suffered and his death on cross was similar to many. The great thing which Jesus did by his crucifixion is to carry all the sins, curses, diseases and problems of the mankind and to take victory over all the powers of darkness by paying his life as a price. While all other people crucified were crucified for some criminal reasons, Jesus was crucified without any sin. The people of this world give the most worst death to Jesus Christ which is the best of best in heaven can also be considered as a specialty in the death of Jesus.

Many times we can see people going behind the cross, dresses and other things which is considered to be of Jesus and of his disciples which are of really no importance. To have a knowledge about the subject, the history is good. But we have to understand that fact that there is no benefit in searching and going behind all these things. It will not help anyone of us to gain some spiritual growth.

Accepting and realizing what Jesus did one the cross and who He is the thing which help us grow in Christ spiritually with maturity.

May God bless all of you with this answer to focus more on Him and his word of God rather than going behind all the physical things. God bless you.

  2. I agree with most of what you said. I don't mean to be "contradictory", just offering some more information. As a history major and student of the Bible, I enjoy looking for details that people often overlook. It was common for inscriptions to be placed over a cross labeling the "crime" for which the person was being executed. In Jesus case, it seems a bit sarcastic considering the unbelief at the time and nature of His "offense". Having said that, there was indeed a major difference in Jesus' crucifixion compared to the normal kind. Usually after a bit of time, if the person being executed was lingering longer than desired, they would break the legs of the victim to speed up the death process. In Jesus case though, he was pierced with a spear, and out poured both blood and water. His legs were not broken as was customary. This was in keeping with prophecy that He would be pierced for our transgressions. I forget the wording exactly, but there was another prophetic OT verse suggesting that He would not have any broken bones. The reason I was curious about the type of wood the cross may have been made of has to do with OT foreshadowing and typologies of Christ. There are various OT verses that make various significant references to types of wood. I know Noah's ark is often pictured as a type of "salvation", and it made me wonder if the type of wood used for the ark may have been the same type for the cross.

  6. The reason why I look at physical things is because that is how JESUS TAUGHT ABOUT HIS KINGDON. and isn't that the true goal to learn more about our Savior.

  7. Not sure why so many people look at the fine details in Jesus life and death. He was here to show us as an example of how to live. We are so far from his teachings year after year, especially now. Why do we have a military, Jesus was about love. Why do we build megachurches built on the backs of the poor? Jesus said the body is the temple. We no longer have the tolerance and love for one another, nor the will to care for the sick and the list goes on and on. Stop the trivial pursuit and stand up to the ugliness in the name of Jesus. Bless you all....
